Invasion day also known as survival day or Australia day. These photographs document important moments in the history of Australia.

“January 26 1788 is the day Sir Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Warrane (Sydney Cove) to claim the land as a British Colony. This day marks the beginning of a long and brutal colonisation of people and land.”

Introduction to Invasion Day

Invasion Day is a term used in Australia to refer to January 26, the date on which the First Fleet of British ships arrived at Port Jackson in 1788, and the raising of the British flag at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip. This event is considered by many Indigenous Australians as the beginning of colonization and the oppression of their culture and people. Some Indigenous Australians and other Australians mark this day as a day of mourning and protest, rather than as a national holiday.

I have come to understand the importance of political photography and activism in our society. In a world where visuals dominate our communication and understanding of the world around us, political photography has the power to shape public opinion and raise awareness about important issues.

Through my work, I have had the opportunity to document a variety of political events, from protests to rallies to election campaigns. I have seen firsthand how powerful imagery can capture the emotion and intensity of a moment, and how it can inspire people to take action.

Political photography can serve as a crucial tool for activists and advocacy groups who are fighting for social justice and human rights. It can help to amplify their voices and draw attention to their cause, by capturing compelling images that convey their message to a wider audience. I hope these images can be shared through social media and news outlets, reaching people all over the world and encouraging them to get involved.

West End Community struggle for public space https://catharticcamera.com/west-end-community-struggle-for-public-space/ https://catharticcamera.com/west-end-community-struggle-for-public-space/#respond Wed, 24 Aug 2016 13:54:07 +0000 https://catharticcamera.com/?p=3022 From the West End Community event page:

All across Brisbane, residents have lost control over their city. From road widenings to mega-developments, from green space to affordable housing, residents’ voices are consistently ignored by a system stacked in favour of corporations and multinational property developers.

On Sunday 21 August, residents of Brisbane met at the new park on the corner of Thomas and Vulture Streets for a community breakfast. Then they marched down Boundary Street to the old Absoe site to demand affordable housing, more green space and sustainable development.

If you can’t see the video above then watch West End Rally for Public Housing and More Public Space on the Absoe Site on youtube.

The breakfast was delicious. I hope people find this video informative. It includes of all the speakers from that morning.

Shout out to West End Community Association, make sure you visit the WECA facebook page for more info.

5th GLOBAL CALL TO ACTION https://catharticcamera.com/5th-global-call-to-action/ https://catharticcamera.com/5th-global-call-to-action/#respond Fri, 27 Nov 2015 07:56:36 +0000 https://catharticcamera.com/?p=3070 A protest to Stop the Forced Closure of Aboriginal Communities in Australia.

From https://www.facebook.com/pg/sosblakaustralia

In the early hours of Black Friday, 13 March 2015, growing frustrations in the Aboriginal community had reached a pressure point. After the repeated failure of successive Government’s to honor Australia’s First Nations at the most basic of levels, the perfect storm was brewing. Compounding this, the global lurch to the right under the guise of ‘austerity’, had seemingly become a code-switch of Government to normalize racism, bigotry, oppression and genocide.

What do you think about the forced closures of Aboriginal communities?

Protester of Peter Dutton fined $1000 https://catharticcamera.com/protester-of-peter-dutton-fined-1000/ https://catharticcamera.com/protester-of-peter-dutton-fined-1000/#respond Tue, 10 Nov 2015 13:33:15 +0000 https://catharticcamera.com/?p=3005 Early this year at Welcomefest we saw what happens when a protester throws his shoes at Immigration Minister Peter Dutton. His name is David Sprigg and he asked me to come to court on the 4th of November as a witness. I wasnt called into court, David was concerned they would accuse him of resisting arrest in which case he would have used my video footage.

I asked David would he mind talking on camera about why we were there and why he threw his shoes at Peter Dutton then the well-known civil rights activist Ciaron O’Reilly spoke at the vigil, congratulating David and wishing him good luck for court. Watch the video below

David represented himself in court, he argued that his action was political protest and not public nuisance but at the end of the day he was fined $1000 for public nuisance. Peter Dutton had been subpoenaed to appear in court as a witness, but he is now overseas and the defence withdrew the summons.

I would describe David as a gentle man, a pacificist, an activist and like Ciaron O’Reilly he is also a religious man. I noticed before David entered court he and a couple of his friends held hands and said a prayer. Let me know what you think of Peter Dutton in the comment section.

I couldn’t keep up with the activity of Anonymous Brisbane this year but you might find more info in the comments.

Anonymous (used as a mass noun) is a loosely associated international network of activist and hacktivist entities. A website nominally associated with the group describes it as “an Internet gathering” with “a very loose and decentralized command structure that operates on ideas rather than directives”.[2] The group became known for a series of well-publicized publicity stunts and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on government, religious, and corporate websites. — Wikipedia

Walk Together Brisbane 2015 https://catharticcamera.com/walk-together-brisbane-2015/ https://catharticcamera.com/walk-together-brisbane-2015/#respond Mon, 02 Nov 2015 20:10:32 +0000 https://catharticcamera.com/?p=2787 On October 31st I attended an event called Walk Together Brisbane 2015. As far as I can tell, it’s an event organized by the Welcome to Australia organization (link and quote below).

We believe Australians are a welcoming, generous and compassionate people. On Saturday, October 31 you’re invited to #SayWelcome in cities and towns across the nation. — https://walktogether.welcometoaustralia.org.au/

At one point in the day there was a small panel discussion. Aleem Shaun Ali asked the question “Whats it going to take to shift the tide of fear, whats it going to take to genuinely embed a culture of welcome in this city and in this nation and whats the one thing that the people here today could take away and practically do differently or just do that will contribute to that?”. Watch the video below for responses.

It was great to see such a diverse group of people coming together. It was also great to see Imam Uzair from Holland Park Mosque, generally I don’t see that much multi-faith representation at these events, I think its due to Abrahamic religions being monotheistic which is somewhat controversial.

I’m very interested in what people think of Australia becoming a republic and what you think about all this, please let me know in the comment section.
